Partner With Us to Fight Big Tobacco
This is a community-wide struggle with many battlegrounds. You or your organization can play an important role as a partner in one of the following efforts:
Tobacco Settlement Funding.
Will the money that's going to the Counties of San Diego and Imperial - and to many of the cities here - be used as intended? The following organizations have taken a stand in favor of spending tobacco settlement money for health care. Join the team! Contact debbie@lungsandiego.org

Tobacco-Free Youth Coalition
To reduce youth tobacco use, the Tobacco-Free Youth Coalition is working to decrease youth access to tobacco products and their exposure to Big Tobacco marketing while reducing the appeal of tobacco products to young people. In 2001, the Coalition hopes that smokers among those under age 20 will amount to less than 7 percent of youth. (Recently the figure was much higher, just over 20 percent.) To achieve this goal, volunteer youth are educating merchants, community service clubs, and their communities about the new tobacco control laws that reduce self-service displays and advertising of tobacco. They're also advocating for stronger laws to ban these marketing practices. The Tobacco-Free Youth Coalition is organizing the youth who participate in the following community-based groups:
Alliance for African Assistance
American Cancer Society
American Heart Association
American Lung Association

Not-On-Tobacco Smoking Cessation
The Not-On-Tobacco program is an initiative of the American Lung Association. Through high schools, alternative schools, and community agencies we reach out to young smokers between 14 and 19 years, to help them quit smoking. It's a hard time, and the N-O-T program builds support for healthy decision-making. The Association trains volunteers, who return to their school or community group to facilitate youth N-O-T support groups. N-O-T volunteers have come from these organizations:
The Charter School of San Diego
Fallbrook Union High School District
Grossmont Union High School District
Poway Unified School District

Target: Hollywood
Look no further than your nearest movie theater or television screen for over-glamorous examples of smoking and tobacco… Then look to the volunteers of Target: Hollywood for the solution! A youth-centered program to reach out and touch Hollywood with the message that smoking is for losers! Target: Hollywood volunteers track media messages and give the feedback that Hollywood needs to hear about how smoking and tobacco use should be treated in media. In our region, some of the following groups partner with the Association in Target: Hollywood -
